ICE Attorney Charged With Stealing Immigrants' Identities

Sanchez is accused of devising a scheme to defraud major banks by using the identities of seven people who were "in various stages of immigration proceedings" with ICE between 2013 and 2017, according to the documents, which were filed in federal court on Monday.
A spokeswoman with ICE's Seattle office referred all questions about the indictment and Sanchez's employment with the agency to the Department of Justice.
In more news on immigration, activists and civil liberties advocates are issuing warnings over reports that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, known as ICE, is seeking to become an intelligence agency.
Officials from the Justice Department and ICE declined to provide further details about Mr. Sanchez's responsibilities and the amount of time he had been on the job.
The information belonged to a Chinese national identified only as R.H., and included images of the person's US permanent resident card, a utility bill and a page of R.H.'s Chinese passport.

According to The Associated Press, the email also allegedly contained a Puget Sound Energy bill in R.H.'s name for service at an address in a southern Seattle neighborhood with a large Asian population, to which property records list Sanchez as the owner of the address cited in the information. The victim was identified only as R.H.
The Associated Press notes that the filing of an information suggests that a plea deal is in the works; it's only filed when the defendant has waived the right to a grand jury. She did, however, tellCNN that she planned to withhold comment on the matter until after Sanchez appeared in court.
The chief counsel, Raphael A. Sanchez, stepped down from his position Monday.
