A young boy who was inside an ambulance that overturned after it was hit by a suspected drunk driver has died, Winston-Salem police confirmed.
The driver of the vehicle, Jose Martin Duran Romero, 27, of Winston-Salem, was charged with DWI. The child was in a stable condition before Romero crashed into the transport, leaving the child critically injured, Winston-Salem Police Lieutenant Rick Newnum told the Winston-Salem Journal.
Police say Romero's vehicle hit the ambulance carrying a 3-year-old boy, causing it to overturn.
Newnum didn't have an exact age for the boy or further details on why he was being brought to the area before the crash happened. A police statement said the mother and two other adults aboard the ambulance were treated for minor injuries.
Gary Oakes said Monday his grandson had been under medical care before the crash but didn't want to elaborate.
The ambulance carrying the child was being operated by Lifecare Ambulance in Wise, Va. Officials there say they would not comment on the incident.
Lyndsay Ann Oakes asked for privacy on her Facebook page.
Romero was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving without a license. The ambulance rolled over on its side and the Honda ran off the road.
The crash happened just after 1 a.m. Sunday on US-52 South between Liberty Street and Martin Luther King Jr.
Neither Romero or his 33-year-old passenger, Andres Figueroa Leon, were injured in the crash.
According to court documents, a witness said Romero had "bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech" and looked "grossly impaired". He is now being detained at the Forsyth, North Carolina detention center.
Leon was charged with failure to render aid/give information, police said.
Initially, Romero was placed under a $50,000 bond, but the bond was revoked and he was being held in the Forsyth County Jail on Monday night with no bond allowed, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said. He has been released from the jail after posting a $1,000 bond, the sheriff's office said.
Romero is set to make his first appearance in Forsyth District Court Tuesday morning, following by a hearing on April 17.
