North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's influential sister attended today's opening ceremony and shook hands with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in; the pair are scheduled to have lunch together. Moon had said "let's create conditions to make it happen", the official said, an indication that Moon was likely to accept the invitation.

"We hope that President (Moon) could leave a legacy that would last over generations by leading the way in opening a new era of unification", she said.

The Trump administration has discouraged South Korea from engaging with the North, which has been subjected to increasingly tough global sanctions, unless it shows clear signs of giving up its nuclear weapons programme.

US Vice President Mike Pence says the United States, South Korea and Japan are in complete agreement on isolating North Korea over its nuclear weapons program, even as the two Koreas deepened their diplomatic detente at the Winter Olympics.

The North Korean delegation was invited to lunch with South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon at the five-star Walkerhill Hotel in eastern Seoul on Sunday, an official at the prime minister's office told Reuters. In January 1968, Kim Yo Jong's grandfather, founding North Korean president Kim Il Sung, sent a squad of North Korean commandos to Seoul who tried unsuccessfully to kill then-president Park Chung-hee. Cyber security researchers said in January they had found early indications that Russia-based hackers may be planning attacks against anti-doping and Olympic organisations in retaliation for Russia's exclusion from the Pyeongchang Games.

After months of silence on whether it would even take part in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in the South, the Games have driven a rapprochement on the peninsula, while the North's athletes, performers and delegates have dominated the headlines.

Nothing has been settled on any trip north by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Pence says NK must give up nukes before talks
How North Korea Managed to Crash the Party Signs of discord in the US-alliance were evident immediately after the announcement. She attributed the decline to a variety of factors including the political taunting between the United States and North Korea.

But Pence said that Moon shared "a bit" about his meeting with the North Koreans, and that he "appreciated him sharing his perspective on that".

As part of his push against North Korean propaganda, Pence attended the short track speed skating with Fred Warmbier, the father of an American student who died previous year after being imprisoned in North Korea for 17 months.

The opening ceremony was attended by several heads of state and included North Korea's ceremonial leader, Kim Yong Nam, and the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Pences, seated next to Moon and just a row ahead of Kim and the North's 90-year-old nominal head of state, remained in their seats, unsmiling.

He has been trying to beat back North Korea's charm offensive while working to fix the break between the US government and South Korea, whose leader is openly pushing for more engagement with Pyongyang.

"It's been exciting for us to partner with Intel on the Winter Olympics, as they continue to push the limits with their advanced drone light show technologies", said Sam Prosser, commercial director EMEA APAC Guinness World Records.

They were on both sides of the ice, chanting back and forth.
