Two Turkish military personnel were killed on Saturday when a helicopter was downed during Ankara's military offensive against a Kurdish militia in northern Syria.

On January 20, Turkey launched a military operation against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia in its western enclave of Afrin, backing Syrian rebels with air strikes and ground troops.

Also Sunday, at least three civilians were killed in government airstrikes and shelling on a besieged, opposition-held area outside Damascus, according to the Observatory.

The Russian ambassador to the United Nations blocked an action by the UNSC on the deteriorating situation in Syria, including in Idlib province -- also a scene of daily ground and aerial bombardment by Russian and Syrian forces - calling the ceasefire idea as "unrealistic!"

"Schools are supposed to be safe places for children, protected under worldwide law, yet they are being attacked every single day", said Sonia Khush, Save the Children'€™s Syria Response Director in a statement.

Turkish officials say the leaders of Turkey, Russia and Iran will meet in Istanbul to discuss peace efforts for Syria.

Unconfirmed Turkish media reports had Turkey had halted flights after Russia, which effectively controls the skies over the region, had closed the airspace over Afrin, following the February 3 downing of a Russian jet in northern Idlib province.
