Hits, not concussions, cause degenerative brain disease

In two of the other cases, abnormal levels of tau protein - which can kill brain cells and is a marker of CTE - accumulated inside their brains. Those brains were compared with others belonging to teen athletes who died without a history of head injury. "It's true that there's a lot we don't know about CTE and traumatic brain injury, but what we do know, for certain, is that limiting the number of hits a player takes is a proven way to protect him or her". The findings explain, for instance, why 20 percent of CTE athletes who exhibited the early stages of the illness postmortem never had a diagnosed concussion.

CTE is a neurodegenerative disease, which causes the tau protein to accumulate in small blood vessels in the brain.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a cause for concern for many athletes and veterans, as it is a degenerative brain disease that causes serious cognitive, mood, and behavior problems. Over the summer, a group of researchers examined the brains of 111 National Football League players and published a study showing that 110 of them suffered from CTE. The brains of those who did not experience head injuries did not have the same signs, the researchers state.

The researchers also conducted experiments that re-created sports-related head impacts on laboratory mice.

"The same brain pathology that we observed in teenagers after head injury was also present in head-injured mice", Goldstein told BU Today.

"We also saw the very earliest fingerprints of CTE soon after these injuries, and this is really very profoundly disturbing", Goldstein said.

Winter Storm Inga batters the south with snow, ice and freezing rain
Snow-covered roads were reported in the Memphis and Nashville , Tennessee, metro areas Tuesday, where 1 to 3 inches had fallen. Those figures were nearly certain to worsen Wednesday as snow and ice affected airports from the Deep South to New England.

Lee Goldstein, coauthor of the study, said, "We were surprised that the brain pathology was unrelated to signs of concussion". In the deep recesses of the organ's folds, these damaged blood vessels were letting proteins spill into nearby brain tissue, triggering inflammation, they surmised.

Goldstein said parents should heed the warning that CTE can develop early - and the focus on concussions doesn't reduce the risk.

Goldstein said he hoped this new information would be taken into consideration by football policy makers, professional players and parents, noting that it was important to now focus on ways to. But the mechanisms behind CTE have been unclear.

"To prevent the disease, you have to prevent head impact - it's hits to the head that cause CTE", corresponding author Dr. They tested the hypothesis by exposing lab mice to two different triggers linked to CTE: repeated head impacts and blast exposures.

"I did not play tackle football until high school, I will not allow my grandson to play until 14, as I believe it is not an appropriate sport for young children", Carson said.
