Lebanon bans The Post

The company distributing the film in Lebanon confirmed to AFP that the film about the Washington Post's pursuit and publishing of the Pentagon Papers would be released in movie theatres in the capital of Beirut and elsewhere on Thursday.

The film was threatened with a ban because of Spielberg's links to Israel, a country with which Lebanon is still officially at war. Over the past three years, at least five films either directed or produced by Spielberg were accepted and approved by the Lebanese censorship board.

The ban comes after Lebanon outlawed the screening of Wonder Woman in May previous year.

Lebanon's Interior Ministry has overturned a directive to ban Steven Spielberg's drama, "The Post", after the country's prime minister intervened to allow the screening of the movie in Lebanese theaters, the head of the movie's distribution group told Annahar Wednesday.

"We think this is not the right decision", he said.

Lebanon also banned a movie by French-Lebanese filmmaker Ziad Doueiri in 2013, named The Attack, for using the shooting location of Tel Aviv and employing Israeli actors in the main roles.

Triple J's Hottest 100 is arguably the best part of the day and if a date change is good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

With less fanfare, the movie "Jungle", starring Daniel Radcliffe, was banned in December because the story of survival in the Bolivian jungle was based on the autobiography of an Israeli citizen, Yossi Ghinsberg.

The security body had on Monday announced it was banning the Hollywood thriller to comply with an Arab League boycott targeting supporters of Israel.

Lebanon's government has encouraged this anti-Jewish and anti-Israel hatred through the years. It seems that anything remotely connected to Israel can get banned in Lebanon. Over 1,000 Lebanese civilians and 43 Israeli civilians died in the fighting.

The two countries are still technically in a state of war. "Lebanon, or certain sectors in Lebanon, have recently realized the dangers of cultural and academic normalization with Israel. after this whole Arab overture to Israel".

Lebanon is widely seen as a relative bastion of free speech in the Middle East. In early January, the courts issued an arrest warrant for a television presenter, Maria Maalouf, after she criticized Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. "Independence Day" and "True Lies" were barred for portraying Arabs in a bad light, and nearly all movies featuring homosexuality are forbidden.
