Intel says newer chips also experience sudden reboots after Meltdown-Spectre fixes

Windows 10 MICROSOFTWindows 10 users have been warned to stay away from a fake Meltdown and Spectre patch

Intel released a new update on the state of the Meltdown and Spectre patches that reveals the reboot errors that it previously disclosed, which plague Broadwell and Haswell systems, also impact Kaby Lake, Skylake, Ivy Bridge, and Sandy Bridge processors.

Intel said that it had replicated these issues in internal testing, and that it's making progress in terms of identifying the precise cause. The company said that its firmware updates are out for 90% of Intel processors produced in the past five years, but it still has "more work to do".

Infosec firm Bridgeway has found that only four per cent of enterprise smartphones and tablets in the United Kingdom have been patched against Meltdown and Spectre, the chip vulnerabilities that were disclosed earlier this month. It intends to ship a beta microcode to system builders next week.

Separately, technology website The Register reported, citing a document in Oracle's customers-only portal, that certain versions of Oracle Solaris on SPARCv9 are affected by one of the chip flaws, named Spectre, and the company was working on a security patch for it. Intel's stress tests - which, in this case, means a 100% write case - showed an 18% decrease in performance, though switching to a 70/30 read/write model improved things drastically, bringing the performance hit up to 2%.

Apple, Cisco, Dell, Fujitsu, Google, IBM, Juniper, Microsoft and Oracle are among the many vendors that must update users' firmware and operating systems with Meltdown and Spectre protections.

But Oracle and many other vendors have yet to publish a full list of affected products or a timeline for when users can expect to see patches.

Last week, Intel shared initial benchmarks for its Spectre and Meltdown patch for recent consumer-focused Core i7 CPUs. "To date, we have tested server platforms running two-socket Intel Xeon Scalable systems - code-named Skylake, our latest server microarchitecture", Shenoy says.

Intel issued the update as part of a broader update on the performance impact of the patches on data center workloads. "For example, there are other mitigations options that could yield less impact", Shenoy says, pointing to an Intel white paper for more information.
