A 28-year-old gamer who allegedly shot dead his mother after an argument with her over his broken video game headset on Thursday night (11 January) has been taken into custody by police in California. Police say he grabbed a nearby handgun that was in the Nicholson home and shot two rounds into the wall, then shot his mother in the head. His mother, 68-year-old Lydia Nicholson, had entered to check on him after hearing him yelling while playing his game.

During the dispute, Matthew broke his gaming headset and blamed her, threatening to kill her and his father. She died at a hospital.

When the victim went to check on Nicholson, the pair began to argue.

After retreating to his room, Lydia Nicholson reportedly attempted to check on him, resulting in a re-ignition of the earlier argument and another shouting match, police reports indicate.

Police say the suspect's father eventually wrestled the gun away from his son.

He threatened to kill both the mother and his father, and went to get a gun from the home.

The Ceres Police Department is handling the investigation.

KCRA 3 News reports Lydia was active in the community and volunteered in local schools.

Nicholson was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail where he is being held without bail.

Nicholson worked at Christine Sipherd Elementary School in Modesto, but left a year ago, Jamie Trevino, who says her kids go to the school, said in a Facebook comment.
