On Friday, Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced a $33 million donation to provide 1,000 scholarships to DACA youth, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced Friday that he would give $33 million in scholarship money to undocumented students who are in the USA under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, the policy at the center of a roiling immigration battle between the Trump administration and Democrats. "We're a three-and-a-half-year-old program, so we don't yet have graduation rates", said the organization's president, Candy Marshall, in a statement.

Bezos, along with other executives, signed an open letter to President Trump asking the legislators to draft a law for the protection of those affected.

"MacKenzie and I are honored to be able to help today's Dreamers by funding these scholarships", Bezos said.

In a press release announcing the grant, Bezos noted that his stepfather Miguel was born in Spain and immigrated to the USA from Cuba when he was 15 years old.

TheDream.US was set up in 2014 by Donald Graham, former publisher of The Washington Post, The Hill said.

Medical marijuana is legal in IL , and it is against current law for students to use it in school or have school nurses administer it.

"With a lot of grit and determination - and the help of some remarkable organizations in DE - my dad became an outstanding citizen", said Bezos.

TheDream.US is the largest scholarship program in the country for participants in the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program (DACA), who are often called Dreamers. Undocumented students are ineligible for federal financial aid, including grants for low-income students, and in some states they are also forced to pay out-of-state tuition at public colleges. They must pay out-of-state or worldwide tuition in more than 15 states, the foundation said.

Graham said he emailed Bezos after his Tweet to explain that the program matched his goal of meeting an huge short-term need while also changing the country in the long term. As of now, 2,850 students are enrolled in college through this program. The organization is accepting applications from Dreamers in 15 states until March 1, she said.

The president's latest comments were immediately contradicted by Illinois Democratic Senator Richard Durbin, who was in the Oval Office meeting and says Trump made the "vile and vulgar" comments repeatedly.

Personalities such as Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Bill and Melinda Gates, and Pierre and Pam Omidyar are just some of the notable benefactors.
