Protective Edge was a 51-day military campaign in the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2014, during which Israel killed at least 2,251 people in Gaza, mainly civilians, according to the United Nations figures.

The Israeli military has said it destroyed an attack tunnel built by the Hamas militant group that stretched from the Gaza Strip into Egypt.

Residents in Gaza said Israeli jets bombed an area east of the southern town of Rafah, by the Egyptian and Israeli borders, late on Saturday night. Israel later confirmed the attack immediately after, but gave no details.

There was no immediate comment from Hamas or Egypt, or any reports of casualties.

Tensions have risen in the region since US President Donald Trump reversed decades of US policy on 6 December by recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital. This has racked the nation and caused the Palestinians, who reside in Gaza to launch 18 cross-border rockets, which has claimed the lives of 15 protesters and two gunmen.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the tunnel was a "major terrorism infrastructure belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip". We are responding to the attacks against Israel, in a very clear and well laid-out pattern of destroying the infrastructure arrayed against us.

His mother, 68-year-old Lydia Nicholson, had entered to check on him after hearing him yelling while playing his game. During the dispute, Matthew broke his gaming headset and blamed her, threatening to kill her and his father.

But Yoav Galant, a member of Netanyahu's security cabinet, said on Army Radio that Israel is "not looking for confrontation with Hamas". Fishermen from Gaza are known to bring in catch from Egyptian territory as a way of sidestepping restrictions imposed by an Israeli naval blockade.

Earlier Saturday, Israel's defence ministry said the Kerem Shalom goods crossing between Gaza and Israel near Rafah would be closed from Sunday "until further notice".

While Hamas claimed that the tunnel was used to pass goods into Gaza, the IDF said that it was meant to smuggle weapons and militants into the Palestinian enclave for terrorist attacks. "Hamas needs to understand that these attacks will continue".

Gaza is run by Islamist group Hamas, which has fought three wars with Israel and is designated a terrorist group by Western countries and Israel.

Israel has been constructing a sensor-equipped underground wall along the 36 mile Gaza border, aiming to complete the $1.1 billion project by mid-2019.
