Bautista Agut Outlasts Del Potro for ATP Auckland Title

Australian Open: Survival of the fittest as 'open' season starts down under Bautista Agut makes it two titles in Auckland

Roberto Bautista Agut claimed his second Auckland Open title with an entertaining win over Juan Martin del Potro in the final on Saturday.

But both times Del Potro was able to rely on his running forehand to save himself and at 4-4 he broke the Spaniard before successfully serving for the match.

The second-seeded del Potro - a red-hot favourite for Saturday's Auckland final - fell 6-1 4-6 7-5 to his Spanish opponent, failing to fire early.

Later, an emotional dedicated his victory to his family in Spain. I've been fighting a lot on the court and I couldn't believe I was playing my best tennis.

"I didn't play another match during the day, so I felt a big difference in the weather, but it's not an excuse - I had my chances to win, too". "It's a big event for me, another Grand Slam which is wonderful after all my wrist problems", he said.

"He was playing very tricky, playing very smart". "Roberto started very well. I tried to have Juan Martin moving around the court". "I think I played very aggressive..."

A slight misfocus from del Potro saw him commit countless backhand errors, and Bautista Agut soon made the first breakthrough, together with the golden opportunity to serve out the match.

Earlier, fifth seed Bautista Agut outlasted Dutchman Robin Haase in an epic clash that took nearly three hours before the Spaniard produced an audacious backhand lob that kissed the baseline to clinch the 6-7 (7) 7-6 (3) 7-6 (5) win.

He had beaten Steve Johnson in three sets in Wednesday's second round. He struggled throughout the match to profit from his first serve but looked risky when able to hit his famous forehand while moving into the court.

The ex-US Open victor and 2009 Classic champion was broken in each of his three first-set service games and didn't rebound until late in the second.

"I was a break up in every set and right after I got (it), he breaks back". He again saved a break point before winning the set in 50 minutes.
