Contentious U.S. Senate candidate Joe Arpaio continues to spout unfounded claims that Barack Obama's birth certificate is "phony".

Three months before Obama's 2012 re-election, he tweeted: 'An "extremely credible source" has called my office and told me that @BarackObama's birth certificate is a fraud'. "I want to get it to Congress so they can pass some type of law, regulation, that when somebody runs for president, you oughta check their background, so this won't happen again", Arpaio stated.

It's hardly the first time the former sheriff ― who was past year convicted of misdemeanor criminal contempt of court for defying an order to stop racially profiling Latinos ― has claimed Obama's birth certificate is fake. The president has also publicly praised Ms McSally-and Mrs Ward as well-calling the congresswoman, who has consistently voted with his agenda, "my friend" and "the real deal".

Cuomo directly asked, "You believe that President Obama's birth certificate is a phony?"

Ward, a right-wing former state senator, went on to praise Arpaio, calling him a "patriot" and "a leader on fighting illegal immigration" who's "fought for the rule of law". Sinema announced in September that she's running in her party's primary for Flake's open seat. She demanded that Arpaio cease being so aggressive, and Arpaio ignored her. However, when Sunny Hostin pointed out that Donald Trump was also kind of a fringe candidate who is now in the White House, McCain took exception. "I don't think they would".

"I'm not going down there to spend 20 years as a senator", he said.

Because of his reputation, Arpaio would be a highly controversial figure running in the Republican primary. "We have the Peace Corps, the old Peace Corps, let them go over there and let them come back legally".

If Arpaio had chose to run for governor, Arizona law would have required him to resign immediately as sheriff.

Last fall, Trump pardoned Arpaio, who was convicted in July of criminal contempt for violating a federal court order to stop racially profiling Latinos. Republican Representative Martha McSally has reportedly told colleagues she plans to run and has scheduled "special announcement" events in Tucson, Phoenix and Prescott on January 12th.

Indeed, Mr Arpaio seems to have maintained many of his most controversial stances as he mounts his Senate campaign.

Arpaio made the announcement Tuesday, injecting new uncertainty and attention into the race that's already among the year's most-watched.
