USA president Donald Trump is in "excellent health", Dr Ronny Jackson said in a statement after he gave the president a medical examination.

Trump spent about three hours with military doctors at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, an exam that White House doctor Ronny Jackson said went "exceptionally well".

"I look forward to briefing some of the details on Tuesday", Jackson said in a statement. The results have most often been a general recounting of the president's height, weight, cholesterol levels and the like.

Mr Bornstein had previously written about Mr Trump's health in glowing terms, stating in 2015 he would be "the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency".

Last October, Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is a member of the president's Republican Party, told reporters that Trump's behavior had raised issues about his "leadership, and just his stability, and the lack of desire to be competent on issues and understand".

The checkup for the 71-year-old president would not include a psychiatric evaluation, Sanders earlier told reporters.

Nearly always, the physician conducting the exam makes a general assessment of the President's health, and declares him fit to serve in the office.

Usually going for a medical check-up isn't a big deal, unless of course you're the President of the United States of America. Previous presidential physicals also mostly excluded mental acuity readings, at least any that were disclosed to the public.

Physical exams for presidents have been a norm since Richard Nixon, according to ABC News, but they aren't required.

In September 2016, Mr. Trump's personal doctor, Harold N. Bornstein, said Mr. Trump took low-dose aspirin and a statin drug to help lower his cholesterol.

Past presidents are not known to have been tested for mental acuity while in office - including Ronald Reagan, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease five years after leaving the White House.

"All clinical data indicates that the President is now very healthy and that he will remain so for the duration of his Presidency", Jackson wrote in his description of President Barack Obama's final physical exam, in 2016.
