Pakistan PM Abbasi chairs security meet over Trump tweet

Cabinet meeting to discuss Trump tweet tomorrow Trump Accuses Pakistan Of 'Lies And Deceit,' Threatens To Pull Billions In Aid

President Donald Trump threatened to end us foreign aid for Pakistan Monday in his first tweet of 2018 - a move that comes amid strained ties over America's decade-long war in Afghanistan.

In an apparent reference to the $33 billion in aid that Trump says the USA has "foolishly" given Pakistan over the past 15 years, he signed off his tweet: "No more!".

Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee has also been convened for Wednesday where the country's top civilian and military leadership will discuss the situation in the aftermath Trump's statement.

Pakistan summoned the US ambassador in protest against US President Donald Trump's angry tweet about Pakistan's "lies and deceit", while Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif dismissed the outburst as a political stunt.

Following the security meeting, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said he would pay for Trump to audit Pakistan to verify his claim that Pakistan received $33 billion in U.S. aid over the past 15 years.

The United States has suspended $255 million worth of military aid to Pakistan for now, the White House has confirmed, saying the fate of such assistance will depend on Islamabad's response to terror havens.

Former President Hamid Karzai tweeted, "President @realDonaldTrump tweet on Pakistan's duplicitous position over the past 15 years is vindication that the war on terror is not in bombing Afghan villages and homes but in the sanctuaries beyond Afghanistan".

Pakistani Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir-Khan rebuked the United States president's tweet and said that though Islamabad was its ally, America has given it nothing but invective and mistrust. Asif also said Pakistan did not need United States aid.

Trump's harsh words drew praise from Pakistan's old foe, India, and neighbouring Afghanistan, but long-time ally China defended Pakistan's record of combating "terrorism".

"We know that Pakistan can do more to fight and stop terrorism and we want them to step up and do that".

This acrimonious exchange of words between the two countries began after Trump tweeted that U.S. aid of $33 billion to Pakistan was in vain.

The ruling and opposition parties argued that Pakistan does not support terrorist groups and stands strong against jihadist organizations in the region. "We expect far more cooperation from Pakistan in the fight against terrorism", she added.
