CES Provides Reasons To Bet on Intel (INTC) For the Long Term

Intel Addresses the Elephant in the Room CES 2018: Intel announces 'major breakthrough' in quantum computing chip

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich speaks during the CES keynote at Monte Carlo's Park Theater in Las Vegas, Monday, Jan. 8, 2018. For example, these chips could enable smarter security cameras and smart-city infrastructure designed for real-time communication with autonomous vehicles.

At the same CES event Krzanich disclosed that with Intel being the technology partner during this year's winter Olympics being held in Pyeongchang, the chip maker would offer the biggest ever virtual reality experience in some 30 events.

Loihi is Intel's first "neuromorphic" chip - meaning, it can mimic the way a human brain learns and understands. It's Intel's first foray into the AI chip arena. Data is going to redefine how we experience life.

Building off the momentum of this announcement, Krzanich announced significant partnerships, in the Chinese Market, with SAIC Motor and digital mapping company NavInfo.

In immersive media area he introduced the newly established Intel Studios and announced Paramount Pictures will be the first major Hollywood studio to explore this technology in tandem with Intel to see if it all pans out.

"Data is the foundation of innovation", Krzanich said, as he outlined Intel's vision for technology.

In December, YouTube said that Google was planning to increase the number of staff reviewing videos to more than 10,000. According to Check Point, Google removed the malicious apps hours after they were notified of the issue.

He added that there had to date been no confirmed cases in which customer data had been accessed via exploits created to take advantage of the flaws. Krzanich did not address the company's plans for older chips.

At the time of Mr. Krzanich's sale, Intel was working with chip rivals and software partners to patch the security flaws, which were built into a variety of chips including virtually all Intel processors going back more than a decade. The underlying technology to make this future a reality already exists today, " he said as he showed a video of himself flying in a Volocopter, a single-passenger electric helicopter made in Germany that uses Intel technology.

Concerning AI, Intel will bring AI to the Ferrari Challenge North America Series this year. Called Intel Studios, the unit will create both VR and non-VR content.

In opening remarks during his 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) keynote, Krzanich said he wanted to thank the industry for collaborating together to keep customer data safe. This marks the first-ever live virtual reality broadcast of the Olympic Winter Games and will be available in the USA via a forthcoming NBC Sports VR app. Thirty events will be viewable from different angles both live and on demand, the company said, and it would be expanding the initiative to the National Football League with cameras installed inside players' helmets.

The new chip, Krzanich said, is "a major breakthrough for quantum computing" and comes just two months after Intel announced it had fabricated a 17-qubit test-chip. He then went on to promise a slew of fixes and updates that would be arriving within a week to take care of the issue on more than 90 percent of their portfolio released in the last five years.
