UIDAI on Wednesday introduced a novel concept of "Virtual ID" in which Aadhaar-card holder can generate from its website.
Aadhaar holders can generate a random 16-digit Virtual ID every time which can be used to authenticate at authorised agencies like banks and telecom service providers.
However, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the statutory body collecting Aadhaar data and issuing UID numbers, denied such leaks saying there "has not been any Aadhaar data breach". It's a major change, .
People applying to get the Aadhaar Card, an easily verifiable 12 digit random number as Unique Identity. It will be temporary and revocable, mapped to a person's Aadhaar number. These details include names, home addresses, photographs, phone numbers and email IDs.
An official said agencies had been given sufficient time to migrate to the new system by updating the software needed to offer the additional option of Virtual IDs to users. "There will be only one active and valid VID for an Aadhaar number at any given time", the UIDAI said in a statement.
Recently a report has stated that, the UDAI is going to introduce the virtual ID and also limit the Know Your Customer (KYC) to prevent from Aadhar Data breech.
It also added a safety feature to ensure only need-based sharing of information, by way of a limited KYC, even as it asserted that the system and data were safe. The New Aadhar virtual and and limited KYC will come into existence from 1st June, 2018, as per the information from the reports. As per UIDAI, agencies that undertake authentication will not be allowed to generate Virtual IDs on behalf of Aadhaar holders.
