After Senior SC Judges Press Conference CJI Dipak Misra'Hearing Cases Like Everyday Opposition sees 'danger' in judges revolt

"We collectively tried to persuade the CJI that certain things aren't in order so take remedial measures but unfortunately our efforts failed", said Justice Chelameswar.

Exposing a rift with Chief Justice Dipak Misra, some of the Supreme Court's most senior judges told a news conference the issues involving its administration were serious enough to prompt them to go public.

Today, the four senior judges of the Supreme Court of India conducted press conference against CJI Dipak Misra.

The Justice Chelameshwar began press conference by terming it as the extraordinary event in the history of the judiciary in India.

Senior counsel and former Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium too was recommended for appointment as judge of the apex court straight from the top court's bar.

The press conference and these details come just a few weeks after Chelameswar had a tiff with Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra over a case hearing. "The thing was done, but in a way, that it raises doubt on the integrity of the institution", said Justice Chelameswar.

Advocate Varinder Kumar Sharma, appearing for another petitioner Congress leader Tehseen Poonawala, said this is a case where a mysterious death of a judge has taken place on December 1, 2014 and it needs to be investigated.

Iran has foiled plot to use protests to overthrow system, says leader
At least 1,000 people have been arrested in the biggest anti-government protests for almost a decade, with the judiciary saying ringleaders could face the death penalty.

In a press conference on Friday in New Delhi, the first of its kind, they alleged poor administration at the powerful institution and warned that democracy may not survive.

In the letter, they mentioned instances of cases with "far-reaching consequences for the nation and the institution" that were selectively assigned by the chief justice without any rational "basis for such assignment". "That is what we believe and many more things happened". The presence of senior advocates like Indira Jaising added to the atmosphere of judicial rebellion at a time when nearly every institution in the country is witnessing churns unseen since the Emergency.

Justice Gogoi said they were "discharging debt to the nation that has got us here".

Replying a question, Justice Chelameswar said they were speaking only on their behalf. "We don't want wise men saying 20 years from now that Justice Chelameswar, Gogoi, Lokur and Kurian Joseph sold their souls and didn't do the right thing by our Constitution", he said while signing off.

"It's quite shocking. There must have been compelling reasons for the senior-most judges to have adopted this course of action".

The apex court has adjourned the next hearing on the issue for Monday, 15 January.
