Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday disbanding the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

Trump on Wednesday ended his investigation into voter fraud, which he has repeatedly claimed without evidence is the reason Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election.

The termination came about after the commission faced several lawsuits, including one by Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap (D), who was also a member of the commission itself.

"The President's commission has requested the personal data and the voting history of every American voter-including Californians", Padilla said at the time.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, considered a leader of the voter fraud commission, said just last week he expected the group to begin meeting again in early January. She added that the Department of Homeland Security would review the panel's work and "determine next courses of action".

Trump said the commission's work will now go to the Department of Homeland Security.

President Trump has previously alleged "millions" of people voted illegally in the 2016 election.

But without regulation, those hands can prove to be buttery, he said. 'But they come with the risk of being harder to control. But social media also has a darker side: social media-enabled trolling that can lead to problems as severe as suicide.

Trump's voter fraud allegations are unproven, according to the media, but its reporters still cheer attempts to acquire proof.

When Trump tweeted Thursday morning about the need to push hard for voter identification, Grimes responded by calling Trump "either delusional or intentionally lying about voter fraud".

In July 2016, Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale - a Republican - said he planned to comply with the request if the commission could offer assurances that data turned over as part of the request would be stored and used in compliance with Nebraska state law.

The decision is a major setback for Trump, who created the commission previous year in response to his baseless claim that he lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 because of millions of illegally cast ballots...

"It was a very clean election, " said Galvin, whose office oversees elections statewide. Citing voter fraud, Republicans at the state level have enacted new restrictions, such as strict photo ID rules, that disproportionately hinder minority and Democratic voters - which critics characterize as voter suppression.

When the commission sought information on New Mexico's voters, including social security numbers and addresses, Toulouse Oliver denied the request. The Associated Press reported that a study by a Loyola Law School professor found that out of 1 billion votes cast in all American elections between 2000 and 2014, there were only 31 known cases of impersonation fraud.

Trump stoked outrage when he signed an executive order on May 11 creating the so-called Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.
