Cruise AV: GM Removes the Steering Wheel

The future of driving doesn't involve driving- at all. The Washington Post Meet the Cruise AV, GM's First Production-Ready Driverless Car
Terence Owen | 12 January, 2018, 16:41

Cruise AV will be the fourth generation of GM's driverless, all-electric Chevy Bolts, which are being tested at present in San Francisco and Phoenix, online publication TheVerge.com writes. The truly driverless vehicle will roll off the assembly line of General Motor's manufacturing plant in Orion, Michigan.

"We are also working with industry groups and NHTSA to advance the development of new FMVSS that will (a) remove unnecessary roadblocks to new safety technology, such as self-driving vehicles, and (b) advance the safety of self-driving vehicle technology", GM wrote in a new safety report.

If the Cruise AV were to hit the road as planned, it would prove to be three-in-one package, a driverless auto summoned by an on-demand ride-hailing service powered by an all-electric powertrain. "You can safely assume that the fourth generation won't be the last".

In essence, GM is asking for waivers from more than a dozen motor-vehicle safety standards that don't apply to autonomous cars without manual controls.

The autonomous cars now being tested by major companies still have manual controls. It has filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration to test the robocars.

Executives said seven states already allow the alterations sought by the automaker.

If NHTSA gives the approval, General Motors Co. will still require permission from states to run the cars without steering wheel. As defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, cars at that level can drive without human intervention but only in certain geographic areas. Or at least that's what General Motors wants the federal government to say. The automaker has been on a buying spree, acquired LIDAR startup Strobe and Cruise to help it become a "full-stack" autonomous vehicle company.

Other companies, from Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] to Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Waymo, have been testing self-driving vehicle prototypes in limited ride sharing applications, but have been less explicit than GM in announcing plans for commercial robo-taxi services.

The concept shows a vehicle which has no mirrors, steering wheel or pedals, but it does have screens for every passenger and what appear to be two large, red emergency stop buttons in the roof and within reach of all passengers. Most of GM's hydrogen-powered vehicles will most likely be ambulances or delivery trucks.
