The auto will thus use this information to augment the actions of the vehicle and "make driving more enjoyable".
What may sound like the fevered dreams of sci-fi enthusiasts, Nissan is set to showcase the work it has been doing on brain-to-vehicle technology at CES 2018 next week, where it will demonstrate its Intelligent Mobility vision for transforming how auto are driven and their integration in society. By staying physically in the driver's seat, some consumers may feel more comfortable with it compared to self-driving vehicle technology.
Indeed, Nissan believes the Brain-to-Vehicle technology could also be a boon to those who don't want to hand over the steering wheel to a computer. Using artificial intelligence, the auto would then be able to change its driving style or adjust the environment to please you.
"We imagine a future where manual driving is still a value of society", said Lucian Gheorghe, a senior innovation researcher at Nissan. Nissan says the system can react between 0.2-0.5 second faster than the driver without being considered intrusive.
RotM Nissan reckons it has developed technology that will allow you to control cars of the future with your brainwaves.
The tech requires the driver to wear a device that measures brain wave activity. Essentially, the vehicle is reads your thoughts to help predict which move you're going to make next. An AI system will then use the information to predict what you'll be doing -whether you'll brake or turn and then pre-emptively initiating the action 0.2 to 0.5 seconds before reacting. This is analysed by autonomous systems and lets them take actions such slowing the auto - 0.2 to 0.5 seconds faster than the driver.
"Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility, we are moving people to a better world, by delivering more autonomy, more electrification and more connectivity", Schillaci added. Nissan hopes to have some version of Brain-to-Vehicle (B2V) ready for real-world use in th next five to 10 years, Nissan spokesman Nicholas Maxfield said. The disconnect is so great that a driver doesn't even need to touch the wheel while driving on the highway.
Nissan hasn't indicated when the technology will be implemented in a production vehicle.
Nissan will use a driving simulator to display some aspects of the technology at CES.
