Paris police have recovered some jewels stolen from the Ritz Hotel in a dramatic heist, but were still searching Thursday for two thieves and the rest of the missing luxury merchandise.

A judicial source put the value of the jewels seized at "more than four million euros" ($4.75 million).

Three of the group, all aged in their 30s, were arrested at the hotel, while two others are believed to have fled by auto and motorbike.

But the three, all aged about 30, were arrested after being blocked in the building.

Three suspects inside threw bags of goods out a window to at least two accomplices outside, according to a police official.

Three of the gang were detained at the scene but two remained at large as of Thursday evening, a police source said.

The motorcyclist, however, dropped one satchel of loot after hitting a pedestrian in a melee fleeing the scene.

Armed heists targeting jewelry stores are actually fairly common in the area in which the luxurious five-star hotel is located: in Place Vendôme, historical first district, right on the bank of the river Seine and next door to the ministry of justices.

Several luxury brands display their jewels in the storied Ritz, famous as the lodging of choice for Coco Chanel and Ernest Hemingway as well as Britain's Princess Diana, who spent her final hours there before dying in a auto crash in a Paris tunnel in 1997.

Police managed to arrest three of the thieves at the scene but two escaped using a motorcycle and auto.

The hotel was bought in 1979 by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, whose son Dodi was also killed in the fatal crash.

The hotel's management has declined to comment on the robbery.

Interior minister Gerard Collomb praised officers' "professionalism" saying they had "done our police force credit".
