The company recently confirmed that all iPhones, iPads and Mac computers are affected by two processor flaws, called Spectre and Meltdown.

Technology companies are scrambling to fix serious security flaws affecting computer processors built by Intel and other chipmakers and found in numerous world's personal computers and smartphones. Meltdown affects most processors made by Intel, the company that supplies the chips for a majority of PCs and more than 90% of computer servers. But it is even more pervasive, affecting Intel chips, microprocessors from the longtime Intel rival AMD and the many chips that use designs from the British company ARM.

Though details of the issue were not immediately released to the public, experts said that fixing the vulnerability affected both consumers and companies that relied on the processors, and that a fix for the issue could cause huge slowdowns in online services and device performance.

As with many security flaws, it's most likely to be exploited by loading a malicious app on to your Mac or iOS device so only use a trusted source such as the App Store. Updates for iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS that will further guard against Spectre will be released soon. All other computers are actually better off without the fix because for them, the security update can trigger errors, including the Blue Screen of Death. But that has also left them vulnerable to attack, by allowing access to data that is normally securely cordoned off. Apple said it now plans to release fixes for its Safari browser "over the coming days" to help defend against Spectre.

The other bug, which the researchers named Meltdown, cracks the divide between user applications and an operating system (OS).

If NHTSA gives the approval, General Motors Co . will still require permission from states to run the cars without steering wheel. It has filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration to test the robocars.

The researchers say Spectre affects nearly every computing system (desktops, laptops, cloud servers, and smartphones) and has been verified on CPUs manufactured by Intel, AMD, and ARM.

Unauthorized access will be hard to detect so cloud-computing providers need to act quickly to protect against these vulnerabilities, said Ryan Kalember, senior vice president of cybersecurity at Proofpoint.

The company has already issued updates for as much as 90% of processor products introduced within the past five years. Google says Android devices are protected if they have the latest security updates.

Two new hardware-based exploits have been publicized: Meltdown and Spectre. Apple Watch is only affected by Spectre, and Apple TVs are affected - but few details were given. Next, you'll want to update your anti-virus software and be sure you're running the latest version of your web browser, both which can keep you safe from dangerous files that might use these exploits.

"We have found the Meltdown and Spectre bugs in processors used for personal computers, mobile devices, and in the cloud".
