Credit: Philip MichaelsThe world became aware of Vivo's plans a month ago, when Synaptics, which makes the sensor that enables in-display fingerprint scanning, announced that Vivo would become its first customer.
Commenting on the development, Alex Feng, Senior Vice President, Vivo disclosed that the showcase of the in-display fingerprint technology is a step in the right direction.
"Today's showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience". Hopefully we in India will see it sooner.
Vivo's working smartphone is yet to be produced and Synaptics Clear ID sensor has already begun their mass production.
Vivo is one of the top five smartphone vendors globally, according to the IDC Q1 2017 Tracker.
Trying to fit a fingerprint sensor on the front of the phone while also expanding the length of displays has bedeviled phone makers. Users just need to tap on display and it recognizes smartphone through one-touch fingerprint scanning directly on the smartphone display.
Synaptics has said the sensor takes just 0.7-seconds to authenticate the fingerprint and that seems to have played out in various hands-on tests at CES. (It doesn't work in LCDs due to their need for a backlight.) Synaptics said that it's already begun mass production of the Clear ID sensors, and that as many as 70 million units will be made available to OEMs this year. The indicator that asks you to place a finger on it will be present for unlocking your phone, accessing protected content, or doing mobile payments that require biometric authentication, but other than that you can't really tell there's anything else but an OLED display there.
Vivo's most anticipated smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner is finally made official at CES 2018.
The global consultancy Canalys confirms that nearly 22 million full-screen smartphones were shipped worldwide in the second quarter of the previous year.

The phone uses an optical fingerprint sensor from Synaptics.
It did fail to read a couple times, like any fingerprint reader, so it's not a silver bullet solution, at least yet.
