When Zach Worf, president of the Finney County Democrats, argued that legalizing marijuana could be a financial boon to cash-strapped Kansas, Alford told him he should look to the 1930s, the latter part of the prohibition era, for a history lesson. "And so basically, what we are trying to do is we're trying to do a complete reverse with people not remembering what has happened in the past". "What you really need to do is go back in the 1930's, when they outlawed all types of drugs in Kansas and across the United States".

Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives, Steve Alford, apologized Monday for a racist comment where he stated that African-American people were more prone to drug addiction due to "their genetics".

In the video, you hear Alford saying, "One of the reasons why, I hate to say it's the African-Americans, they couldn't they were basically users, and they were, and they basically responded the worst to all of those drugs just because their, their makeup, their genetics". "Substance abuse is a blight on our society, and legalizing marijuana only opens the door to harder drugs".

According to a report by The Garden City Telegram, the comment was made Saturday during a legislative coffee session at St. Catherine Hospital, Kansas.

State Representative Steve Alford (R-Kansas) has admitted he "was wrong" when he said African-Americans are more susceptible to using marijuana due to their "character makeup" and "genetics". They said they were "completely taken aback" and disappointed by Alford's remarks. Alford eventually released a statement Monday, apologizing for any "hurt" he may have caused.

The Garden City area is very diverse, he said, adding that the comments were shocking.

Alford did not immediately respond to TPM's request for comment. "But what he said, I disagree with adamantly". Alford said that a reason for the tightening grip on potential intoxicants at that time was to shield Americans from the consequences of drug abuse by "African Americans".

Alford's remarks drew criticism from leaders in the state's black community and other lawmakers. "Their Satanic music, jazz and swing result from marijuana use", Anslinger also said.

Marijuana legalization efforts in Kansas have not had much success.

"I'm looking at the safety end of it", Alford said.

Republican House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr. said Monday that the comments of fellow GOP state Rep. Steve Alford don't reflect the Legislature's views and are disappointing.

Carl Brewer, the former Wichita mayor and Democratic candidate for governor, condemned Alford's comments.
