One person has died.

Canadian health authorities identified romaine lettuce as the source of the outbreak in Canada, but the investigation in the U.S.is still ongoing. In all, 17 cases were confirmed, the most in California, with three, during the period, the CDC said.

An E. coli infections outbreak has been spreading across both Canada and the United States.

Most of those patients reported eating romaine lettuce before they became ill, the agency said, adding, "Individuals reported eating romaine lettuce at home, as well as in prepared salads purchased at grocery stores, restaurants and fast food chains".

While E. coli outbreaks are typically linked to beef, leafy greens, including romaine lettuce, have been the cause of outbreaks in 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2013, according to Consumer Reports. This is the same type of E. coli that is responsible for the current outbreak in the United States and Canada.

It is virtually impossible for consumers to know if they are consuming E. coli because it is invisible, odorless and tasteless. State and local public health officials are interviewing sick people to determine what they ate in a week before their illness started.

"Even though we can't say with 100 per cent certainty that romaine lettuce is the cause of the E coli outbreak in the United States, a greater degree of caution is appropriate given that lettuce is nearly always consumed raw", said James Rogers, director, food safety and research, Consumer Reports.

However, on its website, it said, "We have not identified a source of the infections, thus is unable to recommend whether USA residents should avoid a particular food". Still, they say, the Canadian finding has proved helpful and both outbreaks appear to have been caused by related strains of the bacteria, suggesting the possibility of a shared source.

The CDC is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the outbreak, and is looking at romaine "and other leafy greens", though according to Consumer Reports, the organization has confirmed that the strain of E. coli in the U.S. is "a virtual genetic match" with the Canadian strain.

E coli bacteria normally live in the intestines of people and animals.

Eschericia coli bacteria, or more commonly known as E. coli, is actually a pretty common bacteria that is often harmless and part of a healthy digestive system.

CDC estimated that each year, 48 million people get sick from foodborne illnesses, 1,28,000 are hospitalised and about 3,000 die.
