CLEVELAND- The American Red Cross is facing a winter blood shortage and is pleading for blood and platelet donations.
More than 150 blood drives were forced to cancel. That's nearly equal to the number of donations collected in two days for the Red Cross nationwide.
There are a number of blood drives being held in Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming, Orleans and Chautauqua Counties over the next few weeks.
"The need is constant, and hospital patients don't get a vacation from blood transfusions, " explained Red Cross Communications Manager Sue Thesenga.
Blood and platelet donations go to medical patients who many times are receiving or have received lifesaving treatments.

Eligible individuals are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). They have to be transfused within five days, Lewis said.
"It's an important blood type for emergency situations", Lewis said.
Every blood donation can be a life-saver for people in hospitals across the state, Michigan Blood stated. Any healthy person 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) may be eligible to donate, although there are height and weight restrictions for people 16 to 18 years old.
