The Pentagon said that it had a secret program that lasted for five years that investigated unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, according to multiple reportspublished Saturday.
There, between 2007 and 2012, a team of researchers working with experts in Nevada probed reports of alien life form and unusual sightings over the U.S. skies - a real life versions of the hit TV show The X Files.
US Senator Harry Reid, who initiated AATIP, said he was proud of the program and what it has tried to achieve.
"I think it's one of the good things I did in my congressional service. I've done something that no one has done before", he added.
"If anyone says they have the answers, they're fooling themselves", Reid, a longtime enthusiast for space phenomena who retired from Congress previous year, said in a tweet Saturday night.
The funding went to Mr. Bigelow's company, Bigelow Aerospace, which hired subcontractors and solicited research for the program.
The Pentagon said on Saturday that its long-secret UFO investigation program ended in 2012, when US defense officials shifted attention and funding to other priorities.
Luis Elizondo, a former military intelligence official, who led the unit, claims he continued his research and to work from his office in the Pentagon until October when he resigned in protest at what he described as excessive secrecy and internal opposition. The Post wrote that Elizondo "sought the release of videos" from the military when he chose to resign from the Defense Department.
The paper's report said researchers with the programme reviewed sightings of UFOs and assessed threats posed by the objects.
But Mr. Elizondo said the only thing that had ended was the effort's government funding, which dried up in 2012.
The program also reportedly studied videos of encounters between unknown objects and American military aircraft.
In 1947, the Air Force investigated more than 12,000 claimed sightings.
Probably more useful to Bigelow is the classified data that his company is being provided with thanks to the government scheme that his friend Harry Reid has set up. Below are some of the most freakish sightings laid out in the declassified reports.
As Rolling Stone helps to point out, DeLonge's To The Stars academy supplied The Times with two videos from 2004 which supposedly show "official" footage that UAPs (that's "unidentified aerial phenomena") exist. Defense officials declined to release the location and date of the incident.
The Times interviewed Defense Department officials and people who worked on the program to render its depiction of the project, which the Defense Department has never acknowledged before.
