According the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the number of homeless increased in 2017.

With 9,160 homeless people, the county has the fourth-largest population of any region in the nation, trailing only New York City (76,501), Los Angeles County (55,188) and Seattle/King County (11,643). On a single night in January 2017, 853 Veterans were experiencing homelessness. That, too, was an increase from the previous year.

"HUD remains committed to our state and local partners, to fighting homelessness in Louisiana and throughout the country", said Beth Van Duyne, HUD Regional Administrator.

- Meanwhile, local communities in IL report the number of persons experiencing long-term chronic homelessness increased by 44 percent ( or 451 individuals ) and homeless Veterans decreased by 85 or 9% since 2016.

That said, the results of our count did grow at a higher rate than the rest of the United States, with the unsheltered count going up 21 percent and overall count of people experiencing homelessness growing by around 8.5 percent.

2,330 were located in emergency shelters or transitional housing programs while 975 persons were unsheltered. Homelessness among families with children decreased by 15.2 percent ( or 700 ) across the state since 2016.

-Third in the number of homeless veterans, with 1,067. On a single night in January 2017, 383 Veterans were experiencing homelessness.

While 30 states and the District of Columbia saw decreases in their homeless numbers, 20 saw increases, including California, up 13.7 percent to 134,278.

HUD's 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress found that nationwide more than 550,000 people experienced homelessness on a single night in 2017. This year, HUD and local communities launched a more intense effort to more accurately account for this important, hard to count population. But it will serve as a baseline to track progress in reducing the number of youth without homes. Local Massachusetts communities also report the number of persons experiencing long-term chronic homelessness decreased. HUD and local communities launched a more intense effort to count homeless youth this year, a hard to count population.

HUD says more than 4,800 of Indiana's homeless residents were found in emergency shelters or transitional housing and almost 570 were living on the streets.

"In many high-cost areas of our country, especially along the West Coast, the severe shortage of affordable housing is manifesting itself on our streets", said HUD Secretary Ben Carson.
