Australian actor and film producer Geoffrey Rush has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Sydney Daily Telegraph over a report in which the newspaper mentioned the actor's "inappropriate behavior".

Academy award-winning actor Geoffrey Rush Friday filed defamation proceedings against a News Corp newspaper in Australia over a story claiming he engaged in "inappropriate behaviour" at a Sydney theatre.

"'Today I have filed defamation proceeding against the Daily Telegraph in the Federal Court of Australia", the 66-year old Oscar victor told reporters.

The actor said he would be taking legal action against The Daily Telegraph for publishing reports about the claims, which he dubbed "false", "demeaning", and "intolerable".

He said the claims had "created irreparable damage" and was "extremely hurtful" to his family and colleagues in the industry.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper broke the story last week that the Sydney Theatre Company had confirmed receiving the complaint.

Edison International (EIX) registers pull back to 17.3 RSI
The utilities provider reported $1.10 earnings per share for the quarter, topping the consensus estimate of $0.89 by $0.21. Perhaps, that suggests something about why 90.65% of the outstanding share supply is held by institutional investors.

Rush's statement follows a series of articles published by The Daily Telegraph, with the first one put on the front page on November 30.

Apart from the "inappropriate behaviour" claim, no further information about the nature of the complaint or who made it was revealed.

Chris Dore, the editor of the Daily Telegraph, said they would be defending the newspaper's reporting in court, reported the ABC.

"At the time the complaint was made, the complainant requested that the matter be dealt with confidentially, and did not want Mr Rush notified or involved in any investigation", a statement read.

Rush has denied the allegations since the first article was published but the news conference on December 8 is the first time the actor has publically spoken on the issue.

Rush is one of Australia's most respected exports, starring in acclaimed films like Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth and The King's Speech.
