Fernandez, her former foreign minister Hector Timerman, and two more political allies are charged with conspiracy to hide Teheran's involvement in a 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre that killed 85 people.

Judge Claudio Bonadio is investigating accusations that the Kirchner government came to an arrangement with Iran in which evidence of its involvement was covered up as part of a joint "truth commission" between the two countries in 2013, paving the way for lucrative trade deals.

The bomb blast that ripped through a Jewish center in Buenos Aires and killed 85 people in 1994 continues to cause shock waves in Argentina's politics.

On Thursday, a prosecuting magistrate ordered the arrest of former president Cristina Kirchner and called on the Senate to begin procedures to strip her of parliamentary immunity.

In 2011, Argentina was roiled by the revelation, immediately denied, that Kirchner had signed a secret memorandum with the Iranian government that would have resulted in the lifting of the red notices, that Interpol maintained on behalf of the Argentine government.

The former head of state said in court that a memorandum of understanding with Teheran - passed by the Argentine congress but not by Iran - "had one aim: to allow an investigation into the Iranians accused in the AMIA attack, so that the case could move forward".

Argentina's public prosecutor, Alberto Nisman, gives a news conference in Buenos Aires, May 20, 2009. Parrilli was ordered not to leave the country.

Macri's coalition performed better than expected in October 22 mid-term elections, gaining seats in Congress. Fernandez, a leftist populist who governed from 2007 to 2015, finished second to a Macri ally in a Senate race in Buenos Aires province but won a seat under Argentina's list system.

Kirchner's leftist alliance in the Senate has a total of 32 seats in the 72-seat Senate, but only around a dozen senators are in the Kirchner camp.

Kirchner is facing trial in several other cases involving corruption and money-laundering during her term as president.

The charges largely stem from a case filed by special prosecutor Alberto Nisman, whose mysterious death from a gunshot wound - hours before he was set to testify before Congress in January 2015 - had rocked Argentina at the height of Ms. Fernandez's power.
