Personal info of 31 million people leaked by popular virtual keyboard Popular Keyboard App with Tens of Millions of Downloads Leaks Data of Its 31 Million Users

A popular virtual keyboard app for Android, Ai.type, is at the centre of a massive data breach, after researchers discovered an open database online.

Reports suggest that the data in question, which has been verified by ZDNet, includes full names and email addresses of Ai.type users, as well as dates showing when the cross-platform app was installed. The keyboard app claims to have over 40 million downloads on Google's Play Store.

Researchers had attempted to contact the company behind AI.type on multiple occasions but it wasn't until this past weekend that they finally acknowledged it. AI.type says it has now secured the database, and that the leak didn't impact AI.type's nine million iOS users.

Around 577 GB of data was exposed online, although only Android users are thought to be affected. He said it contained secondary information that was "mostly statistical behavior information, about user use patterns of the keyboard".

This included the name, email address and location, along with IMSI and IMEI numbers, IP address, phone spec and OS details, and links to user's social media profiles and photos.

Kromtech added that over 6 million records also contained data from users' contact books, "in total more than 373 million records scraped from registered users' phones, which include all their contacts saved/synced on linked Google account". Every single successful cyber-attack or developers failing to secure cloud data exposes millions of credentials and personal details of users, but many mobile phone users are not aware of such risks.

One-third of GOP voters want someone other than Trump for 2020
Fifty-five percent said the GOP is moving the country in the right direction, and 67 percent said the same for Trump's policies. Trump continues to show that he is unable to garner support from a wider range of Republicans and conservatives.

Speaking to ZDNet, Bob Diachenko from Kromtech said: "Theoretically, it is logical that anyone who has downloaded and installed the Ai.Type virtual keyboard on their phone has had all of their phone data exposed publicly online".

While many of those details amount to basic records, the database also house records that revealed more sensitive information about users. Users that opted for the free version of AI.type agreed to have more of their data collected such as their smartphone's make and model, IMEI number and Android version in the app's privacy policy which the company then used for monetisation. "This also exposed just how much data they access and how they obtain a treasure trove of data that average users not do expect to be extracted or data-mined from their phone or tablet". Any text entered on the keyboard "stays encrypted and private", says the company.

'It is clear that data is valuable and everyone wants access to it for different reasons.

Alex Kernishniuk of Kromtech said 'This is once again a wakeup call for any company that gathers and stores data on their customers to protect, secure, and audit their data privacy practices.

"This presents a real danger for cybercriminals who could commit fraud or scams using such detailed information about the user", Diachenko added.

'Some want to sell the data they collect, others use it for targeted marketing, predictive artificial intelligence, and cyber criminals want to use it to make money in more and more creative ways.
