Accepting her prize, Himid began by thanking the people of Hull, saying: "First of all to the people who stopped me to wish well". By awarding this year's prize to Himid, the jury seems to be retroactively recognizing its importance. Rosalind Nashashibi, Lubaina Himid, Hurvin Anderson, and Andrea Buttner the four artists up for Britain's most prestigious art award have been waiting since the spring to find out who will be chosen.

Lubaina Himid has become the oldest artist ever to win the Tate's Turner Prize, at the age of 63. Taking place inside Hull Minster and shown live on the BBC, the broadcast partner for the prize, guaranteeing everyone will have a front row seat for the event. (In its first few editions, the Turner Prize also recognized museum directors and curators.) But this year, for the first time since 1991, artists over the age of 50 were eligible to be nominated for the prize.

Chairman of the Tate Britain's judging panel Alex Farquharson praised Himid's work for addressing "difficult, painful issues", according to the Guardian. She is now based in Preston, England; her work primarily addresses racial politics and the representation of black people in art.

The prize is famous for launching the careers of Damien Hirst and other members of the "Young British Artists" generation.

Works by all four finalists are on display at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull until January 7.

Since the 1980s, Himid has focused on a range of subjects related to race, from matters of the African diaspora to the visibility of black artists in museums. Working across painting, installation, drawing and printmaking, and bringing both old and new work together, her work is both visually arresting and critical. Among her best-known works is the painting "Modern marriage" (1987), where sarcasm joins with social and political denunciation, observes the newspaper, El Mundo. No, she lives and works in Preston, Lancashire, where she's a professor of contemporary art at the local university.
