Twitter users sarcastically replied to Trump, saying it was natural for him to be confused due to the excessive number of recent mass shootings.

Trump took to Twitter this afternoon (AEST), but he tweeted about the "people of Sutherland Springs, Texas".

Matt McDermott tweeted, "The President of the United States is tweeting at midnight about the wrong mass shooting and it's like the 500th most insane Trump story of the week". "The FBI and Law Enforcement has arrived", Mr Trump tweeted shortly after 8.30pm on Tuesday evening.

Yesterday's deadly shooting in California began in Rancho Tehama, a rural community 120 miles from Sacramento.

He further noted that a person in the crowd with a gun shot at the attacker and caused him to flee: "Otherwise it would have been - as bad as it was - it would have been much worse".

The US President mentioned Sutherland Springs in the post, where 25 people were killed in a shooting in Texas two weeks ago.

"The shooter literally took his vehicle and rammed their fence and gate, entered the grounds on foot with a semiautomatic rifle", he told U.S. media.

Johnston did not give a motive for the shooting rampage.

He added the 45-minute spree ended when a patrol auto rammed the stolen vehicle the shooter was driving and killed him in a shootout.
