One Apple Watch sold for every seven iPhones in Q3 2017

Report: Apple is back to being the world's top wearable maker Apple Watch saves kitesurfer from shark encounter, Tim Cook reacts with 'wow'

Well that didn't last long. The report attributes part the success to the new Apple Watch Series 3, which hit global sales as high as 3.9 million. The company making the Apple Watch found itself in that position in Q1 as well, but in Q2 it was overtaken by both Xiaomi and Fitbit. "Strong demand for the LTE-enabled Apple Watch Series 3 has dispelled service providers' doubts about the cellular smartwatch not appealing to customers", Low noted in a report on third quarter shipments. Besides bringing in more stock, operators should work on improving their remote service provisioning systems to cater for the expected higher demand in Q4. Xiaomi and Fitbit trailed Apple with 3.6 and 3.5 million units, mostly consisting of fitness bands. It may have dipped in the middle, but Apple grabbed the top spot in the first quarter of the year for the first time since Q3 2015. "The ability to go for a run with just your Apple Watch, or go for a quick errand without your phone, while staying connected, is a game changer", Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the recent earnings call.

Apple has retaken the top spot from Xiaomi to become the market leader for wearables on the wrist. After the big three there is a big drop off, with Huawei a distant fourth on six per cent. It is worth noting that Xiaomi and Fitbit primarily sell basic wearable, while Apple exclusively dominates the smartwatch category for now.

Overall this is positive news for the market.

But wireless carriers may have underestimated demand and the LTE-capable model could prove more popular in coming quarters, Canalys analyst Jason Low said.

Traditionally, the third-quarter is seen as the weakest period for sales as potential buyers hold off until the holidays, but according to Canalys, all top vendors registered a growth in shipments.

Vendors are expecting a stronger fourth quarter this year, with new smartwatches highlighting improved health-tracking features and longer battery life, on top of better and slimmer designs. "Apple and Samsung are increasing user stickiness and brand loyalty by adopting an ecosystem strategy, which includes wearables and audio accessories".
