'No indication' Saudi coalition reopening Yemen ports

Saudis Will Open Aid Deliveries to Some 'Loyal' Yemen Ports Yemen rebels vow escalation as Saudis look to relax blockade

"This halted the only flights at Sanaa airport - those of the United Nations and other worldwide organisations delivering humanitarian assistance", the rebel-run General Authority for Civil Aviation said.

Since then, Yemen has suffered devastating and indiscriminate airstrikes launched by a Saudi-led coalition to restore Hadi to power.

The kingdom intercepted the missile and no one was injured, but within hours it imposed a fresh blockade, claiming it aimed at preventing weapons being smuggled into Yemen by its regional rival, Iran.

"The authority emphasises that attack is an explicit violation of worldwide covenants and treaties, which stipulate that civilian airports are not targeted", it added.

Transport minister Mourad al-Halimi had said Yemenia flights to the pro-government-held cities of Aden and Seiyun would resume on Sunday, but the national carrier said it did not have the necessary permits to fly. The Hodeida port is held by rebels in Yemen.

We call that #Yemen's sea, air and land borders be reopened as a matter of priority to resume the provision of commercial and humanitarian supplies and the movement of aid workers. On Tuesday, the United Nations called on Saudi Arabia to fully open the ports of Yemen to deliver humanitarian aid to the country.

Jamie McGoldrick, the head of the UN's aid mission in Yemen, criticised the Saudis, saying such measures would take too long to implement and cause needless deaths.

Saudi Arabia and its allies tightened a longstanding blockade of Yemen's land, sea and air borders a week ago in response to a missile fired by the Iran-backed Huthis that was intercepted near Riyadh worldwide airport.

"I would like to draw your urgent attention to the extremely appalling situation in Yemen, caused by aggression, indiscriminate targeting of civilians and a blockade, imposing intolerable suffering on the Yemeni people", Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote, calling for global action to end the mass destruction in Yemen, according to a transcript of his remarks posted on the Foreign Ministry's website.

The humanitarian calamity in Northern Yemen, fueled by Saudi Arabia's blockade, has been killing large numbers of people, a result of lack of medicine and increasingly scarce food. "This does not replace Hodeidah port and Sanaa airport - we need to allow these ports to operate as normal".

The strike comes just a day after Saudi ambassador to the UN Abdallah Al-Mouallimi agreed to reopen some ports to allow aid in.

McGoldrick emphasized on the fact that United Nations aid was the main lifeline for most of Yemen's population, seven million of whom are at risk of starvation. "They need immediate assistance".
