Sunday's 7.3-magnitude natural disaster struck villages and towns in the mountainous area of Kermanshah province that borders Iraq while many people were at home asleep.

Iraqis search for the trapped citizens over the collapsed buildings after a 7.3 magnitude quake hit northern Iraq.

At least 280 people were killed in the town, home to some 85,000 people, where crumpled vehicles lay under the rubble of flattened buildings on the streets. Officials said 12,000 houses had been completely destroyed and a further 15,000 damaged, Irna reported.

"We were happy (after buying the flat), because we had escaped poverty", he said, but added: "look yourself, no one can live in there anymore".

The report Tuesday afternoon by the IRNA news agency said the number of injured in the temblor now stood at 7,460.

In an open space away from wrecked housing blocks, men and women, some wrapped in blankets, huddled around a campfire.

The towns of Eslamabad and Qasr-e Shirin were also affected, while the tremor shook several western Iranian cities including Tabriz.

That was echoed by Nazar Barani, the mayor of the town of Ezgeleh, who told state TV his constituency still had a "deep need" for food, medicine and tents.

In neighbouring Dalahoo County, several villages were totally destroyed, an official told Tasnim agency.

Meanwhile, cops have already found the name of the person - Gena Prasad - who had rented the shop next to the bank. The incident came to light when a customer and a bank officer entered found that 27 lockers had been broken into.

Local health minister Rekawt Rasheed said the situation was "critical", made worse by the fact that the district's main hospital was badly damaged and without power.

More than 500 people were injured in both provinces and the nearby province of Kirkuk.

"We spent two nights in the cold".

"There were eight people inside", the 34-year-old Iraqi Kurd said. The apartment complexes sit next to lush pastures in the nearly entirely Kurdish province of Kermanshah, nestled in the Zagros Mountains along the border with Iraq. Numerous villages affected by quake were very remote and hard to reach, said Bagheri.

It was also felt in southeastern Turkey, an AFP correspondent said.

Britain, France, Germany, Russia and Syria offered their condolences, while Pope Francis called the quake a "tragedy" and expressed his "prayerful solidarity" with victims.

Less than 48 hours after the natural disaster hit Iraq and Iran, authorities in Iran have called off rescue efforts, saying there's little chance of finding survivors in the country's quake-prone western region.

Iran sees frequent seismic activity. The worst damage appeared to be in the Kurdish town of Sarpol-e-Zahab in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani says his administration will probe the cause of so much damage to buildings constructed under a state-owned program in the quake-stricken area along the border with Iraq. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
