Android distribution for November 2017: Oreo stumbles while Nougat makes gains

Android 8.1 Oreo will free up space by shrinking apps you don't use Android distribution numbers for November show almost no change for Oreo

Other than Oreo and Nougat, every other version of Android suffered losses, with even Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich losing 0.1%.

Google's Project Treble promises to help speed up vendor releases of new Android versions, but the benefits of this technology will probably take several years, since only devices that ship with Android Oreo can take advantage of it.

Android smartphone maker Essential promised that it would be releasing an update to Android 8.0 Oreo for its devices soon, and now there's a beta version of the update available through its developer portal.

Firefox 57 brings Project Quantum to the masses
Note that in the wake of opening the tenth tab, Quantum starts to give a squiggly stacking hint on new tabs. Firefox once commanded roughly a fourth of the web browser market, but its share has slid in recent years.

In a blog post, he wrote: "Something that wouldn't have been obvious without looking at the data is that the uptake of new versions seems to be slowing down - we can see this by looking at the last few contour lines at the top right of the graph, corresponding to the most recent Android releases".

After a length of time specified by Android's sysprop pm.dexopt.unopt_after_inactive_days field, applications that haven't been used in a while are marked as inactive by Android and downgraded. "In May 2017, Google announced that there are over two billion active Android devices". If we look at the latest stats (the far right edge), we can see that almost half of these devices are two years out of date. Of course, we're talking about Android fragmentation. With Android 8.1 Oreo, when a device is running low on space, an automatic cleanup process will tidy after these unused apps. Indeed, the majority of devices are still on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, though Android 7.0 Nougat is just a fraction of a percentage point behind.

Let's hope that enough devices are updated by the end of the year to get to 10%.
