Richard Kennett, firearms licensing manager for Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies, said the campaign had got off to a good start, with 14 guns already collected before lunchtime on Monday at police sites in Ipswich and Martlesham.

Launching the drive in the Northwest, Detective Chief Superintendent Mary Doyle, of Greater Manchester Police, said the public should be anxious about the supply of guns on the UK's streets.

The father and friends of Halton McCollin who was shot dead in Stretford in 2008 are urging people to "Give up the Gun" as Greater Manchester Police launches a firearms surrender.

McMillan said those handing firearms in will not be prosecuted for possessing a weapon at the point of its surrender.

Mums, sisters and girlfriends of boys and men who carry guns and knives in Sheffield are being urged to hand in the weapons in a bid to save their lives.

This appeal gives people the chance to dispose of firearms or ammunition by handing them in at their local police station without repercussion.

"The majority of the firearms handed in during the last surrender were older items that the owner no longer needed and wanted to safely dispose of", Chief inspector Mark Colquhoun of Warwickshire Police told the Coventry Telegraph.

Additionally, while the Firearms Act 1968 allows antique firearms to be possessed without a certificate as a "curiosity or ornament", the changes to the law in 2014 now means that if you are prohibited from possessing firearms, you will be unable to possess antique weapons.

"We don't expect that to happen but what we do want to happen is people who surrender these things are removing them from the possibility of ending up in the hands of a criminal", he said.

"We know that the consequences of firearms or replica firearms falling into the wrong hands can be fatal and can cause real fear within our communities".

Police in England and Wales have begun a two-week gun surrender in an attempt to reduce the number of firearms on the streets, after a 27 percent rise in gun crime in the United Kingdom previous year.

"Serious incidents involving firearms in South Wales are thankfully rare. Every firearm surrendered is one less weapon that can be used to commit crime".
