Richard Kennett, firearms licensing manager for Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies, said the campaign had got off to a good start, with 14 guns already collected before lunchtime on Monday at police sites in Ipswich and Martlesham.

"The majority of the firearms handed in during the last surrender were older items that the owner no longer needed and wanted to safely dispose of", Chief inspector Mark Colquhoun of Warwickshire Police told the Coventry Telegraph.
Additionally, while the Firearms Act 1968 allows antique firearms to be possessed without a certificate as a "curiosity or ornament", the changes to the law in 2014 now means that if you are prohibited from possessing firearms, you will be unable to possess antique weapons.
"We don't expect that to happen but what we do want to happen is people who surrender these things are removing them from the possibility of ending up in the hands of a criminal", he said.
Superintendent Glyn Fernquest said: "Whilst we don't experience a high level of gun crime in Gwent, we are joining forces with our partners in Wales and across the United Kingdom to support the national NABIS Fire Arm Surrender 2017".
Weapons can be surrendered at all of County Durham and Darlington's police stations, except Newton Aycliffe - check the station opening times in advance on the force website.
The surrender, which is being co-ordinated by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS), will run for two weeks from Monday 13th November to Sunday 26th November 2017.
"We know that the consequences of firearms or replica firearms falling into the wrong hands can be fatal and can cause real fear within our communities".

"Serious incidents involving firearms in South Wales are thankfully rare. Every firearm surrendered is one less weapon that can be used to commit crime".
