China Is Sitting On The Cloud

Amazon's AWS business is reportedly pulling out of China Amazon surrenders cheapest bit of Chinese cloud

"AWS did not sell its business in China and remains fully committed to ensuring Chinese customers continue to receive AWS's industry leading cloud services.", said a spokesperson.

According to press reports, Amazon is only selling "certain physical assets" and the deal will allow Sinnet to better comply with Chinese laws.

Specifically, the cloud computing division called Amazon Web Services (AWS) is giving up "certain physical infrastructure assets to" Beijing Sinnet Technology Co, like computing equipment, reports Reuters, citing an Amazon spokesman.

Amazon.com Inc is selling off the hardware from its public cloud business in China, amid tightening regulation over online data that is creating a hurdle for technology firms operating in the world's second-largest economy.

In August 2016, Amazon signed a deal to let Chinese tech firm Sinnet operate services provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in China.

Charlie Dai, a Beijing-based analyst at Forrester Research, feels that the move was necessary for AWS to improve its other business areas in the market. Sinnet asked its customers earlier this year to stop using virtual private networks, which are able to circumvent China's Great Firewall.

Amazon's decision casts a shadow over similar ventures in the country.

In recent year, cloud services are becoming a crowded and major competitive domain in China.

However, like its peers, Amazon has found it hard making headway in China, which is dominated by local tech giants Alibaba and Tencent Holdings Ltd. Companies targeted by the regulations are required to carry out a security self-assessment or obtain approval from the relevant regulator before transferring the controlled data overseas.

Amazon shares acquired 50 cents to $1,129.67 mid-morning Tuesday.
