Belmont, Arizona, which will house around 160,000 people in 80,000 homes, will embrace "cutting-edge technology" throughout the city, which is to be built on a desert area now occupied by just a few dozen people.

Bill Gates' Cascade Investment LLC has paid about $80 million for a large stake in Belmont in West Valley, a 24,800 acre development about 45 minutes west of Phoenix, according to the Arizona Republic.

In the press release of the Arizona based real-estate group, Belmont Partners said that the smart city-Belmont would make and encourage an advanced-thinking community with the connectivity and structural framework that encircles cutting edge technology, data centers, novel manufacturing techniques and distribution designs, self-driven automobiles, and autonomous logistics centers. The company said that the community is "comparable in square miles and projected population to Tempe, Arizona". The entire area is nearly underdeveloped at present with only few residents, though the Belmont Partners development partners said that they have huge plans in turning the massive desert into a "smart city".

The investment represents the latest example of the excitement that surrounds the rebuilding of cities from the ground up having a digital mind set.

"Bill Gates is known for innovation and those kind of things and I think he picked the right place". However, developers Belmont Partners plan to build 80,000 homes, 3,800 acres of industrial, office, and retail space, and 470 acres for public schools, leaving about 3,400 acres of open land.

Arizona has a reputation as being a technology-friendly state.

Gates, former CEO of Microsoft, has spent most of his life bringing affordable technology to the masses in hopes of bettering the world.

Mr Gates' goal is to create a smart city called Belmont on the almost 25,000 acres of land.

Over the past two years Waymo, Google's driverless vehicle business, Uber, Lyft, General Motors (NYSE: GM - news) and Intel (Euronext: INCO.NX - news) have been testing hundreds of autonomous cars in the city of Phoenix. While now without water or electricity, the city's growth would also be driven by the completion of I-11, an interstate highway connecting Phoenix to Las Vegas, Nevada.

There's no word on when construction will start or even when they hope to have the city completed. "He's coming to Arizona", Schott said.
