India not only recorded the maximum deaths in the year, but also the most due to air pollution: 18 lakh.
The next largest risk factor, water pollution, accounted for 1.8 million deaths, while pollution in the workplace was linked to 800,000 deaths globally.
According to the November 2016 newsreport, data showed that in 2015, India witnessed 3,280 premature deaths (fatalities due to Ozone concentration and particulate matter concentration) per day, whereas China had recorded 3,230. Over 70 percent of these diseases are non-communicable, like cardiac and respiratory conditions.
Around 2.5 million people in India were killed by pollution in 2015 - almost a quarter of all deaths - and 1.8 million in China.
The harm from pollution, the report says, is not just measured in people's health and lives.
The Lancet Commission on pollution and health is a two-year project that has involved more than 40 global health and environmental authors led by Philip Landrigan, an environmental scientist. Despite its far-reaching effects on health, the economy and the environment, pollution has been neglected in the worldwide assistance and the global health agendas, and some control strategies have been deeply underfunded. This number was three times more than deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined and 15 times more than from all wars and other forms of violence.

The biggest cause of pollution death was found to be chemicals in the air, both outside and within households. In the case of water pollution, 0.5 million deaths were caused by unsafe water source while unsafe sanitation caused 0.32 million deaths.
Aside from outright poisoning, pollution causes an array of deadly ailments such as heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
"Proportionally, low-income countries pay 8.3 per cent of their gross national income to pollution-related death and disease, while high-income countries pay 4.5 per cent", the researchers said.
The report has indicated that most of these deaths have occurred in low and moderate income nations.
The authors said air pollution affected the poor disproportionately, including those in poor countries as well as poor people in wealthy countries.
In every country, said the study, diseases caused by pollution is most prevalent among minorities and the marginalized sections. Proportional levels of pollution death were greater in Russian Federation (8.57%), Poland (10.8%), Hungary (9.72%), Slovakia (8.95%) and the Czech Republic (8.47%).
Among all the western European countries included in the study, only Belgium had a worse record than the United Kingdom in terms of the proportion of deaths blamed on pollution - 8.59%.
