Facebook tests paid news on insta articles, selects publishers for experiment

Facebook is now testing paywalls and subscriptions for Instant Articles Facebook is letting 10 media outlets charge readers subscriptions to view stories

Facebook is introducing a new way for publishers to monetize content using its Instant Articles format, but the feature won't be coming to iOS anytime soon according to Recode.

The social network giant said it will test "premium news models" for organizations that deliver their content on Facebook, to enable the publishers to have more control over pricing, subscriber relationships and revenue. The second is a freemium model where the publishers choose which articles to lock.

Publishers selected to take part in the trial run are Bild, The Boston Globe, The Economist, Hearst-owned properties The Houston Chronicle and The San Francisco Chronicle, La Repubblica, Le Parisien, Spiegel, The Telegraph, Tronc (The Baltimore Sun, The Los Angeles Times, and The San Diego Union-Tribune), and The Washington Post. If you encounter a paywall but already have a subscription with that publisher, you'll be able to enter your credentials to get full access to their articles within Facebook.

If that person subscribes, the transaction will take place on the publisher's website. "The publisher will process the payment directly and keep 100 per cent of the revenue", the company added. The subscriptions will then also include access to the publisher's full site, and existing subscribers can also authenticate within Instant Articles so they can get full access without paying twice.

These subscriptions include full access to a publisher's site and apps.

If this test is successful, Facebook is expected to expand the subscription effort in 2018.

"A strong publisher community is ultimately good for Facebook, because people are more likely to share quality content", said Brian Wieser, a senior analyst at Pivotal Research.

Facebook's Instant Videos allows users to download videos to their mobile devices when they have free Internet access, such as a Wi-Fi hotspot or at home.

The tool will roll out over the next few weeks, and one a publisher is on board paywalls and subscriptions will immediately be available to all users seeing those stories. Recode on Thursday reported that Apple wanted its usual 30 percent cut of subscription revenue generated through the tool, but Facebook didn't agree to those terms since it wants the publishers to keep all the money.

Facebook (FB) is scheduled to report its 3Q17 results at a time when it is making an aggressive video push.
