President Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) are appealing a 2016 High Court judgement.

State prosecutors set aside the charges in April 2009, paving the way for Zuma - who has faced and denied numerous corruption allegations made since then - to run for president later that year. Last month, Zuma's legal counsel admitted the decision to withdraw the charges was irrational.

The NPA has responsibility for deciding whether to reinstate the charges, which relate to a 30 billion rand ($2 billion) government arms deal arranged in the late 1990s.

"He has got his proxy or proxies in the race and of course it would reflect on them, because it would put more pressure on them to continue to take clear stands against corruption at a presidential level", she said by phone on Thursday.

The court on Friday didn't immediately release its detailed judgment or indicate its response to a request by the opposition Democratic Alliance for it to order that the case should proceed immediately.

Defence attorney Chrispen Machingura said that after Friday's ruling, all eyes would be on the NPA.

The ruling will be delivered at 09:30 in Court A.

The NPA said it accepted that Mpshe could not rely on section 179 of the Constitution, as he'd earlier declared, as this section did not allow the prosecuting authority to review its own decisions.

Reuters has not independently verified the emails, and Zuma and the Guptas have consistently denied wrongdoing.
