A Hole the Size of Maine Just Opened in Antartica's Sea Ice

В Антарктиде обнаружена гигантская загадочная дыра Currently scientists investigate the circumstances and cause of its occurrence

According to scientists, the formation of huge holes in the ice layer on the sea surface can lead to significant climate changes as a result of the circulation of sea water, and further analysis of the data will help to more accurately assess the possible consequences of these processes for the terrestrial climate. But this particular polynia is unique for two reasons.

"It's hundreds of kilometers from the ice edge". Such ice-free areas are called 'polynya' (Russian) by polar scientists.

The harsh winter in Antarctica makes it hard to find holes like this one, so it can be difficult to study them. Perhaps we'll have the answers before the hole fills in again. After that, it disappeared and didn't re-emerge for decades.

This particular polynia has also appeared in this location twice before, once a year ago and once in the 1970s.

"This is now the second year in a row it's opened after 40 years of not being there", Moore said. This nearly twice the size of the Netherlands and marginally smaller than Ireland.

Scientists are now working to understand how often the massive hole appears, and how climate change could affect it. Last month, SOCCOM scientists were astonished to discover that a float in the Weddell Sea had surfaced inside the polynya, making contact with satellites in the dead of winter.

The Weddell Polynya was first spotted in satellite observations during the mid-1970s.

Sensex, Nifty turn choppy; Airtel, Coal India top losers
At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 90.42 or 0.28% at 31,833.99 with 23 components registering drop. The Nifty50 revisied sub-10,000 level and was trading at 9,990.65, up 5.85points, or 0.06 per cent.

"To our great surprise, it came back this year even larger than last year", Moore said.

A polynya allows heat to escape the ocean, cooling the top layer of the sea water.

The deep water in that part of the Southern Ocean is warmer and saltier than the surface water. It's very large, and it's located far away from the warmer ocean water.

Simulated temperature development in the area of the polynya is illustrated above.

As scientists continue to hone their climate models and flawless their predictions, they're getting closer to being able to accurately simulate the exact process at work, but a full explanation may still be years away. The team, comprised of scientists from the University of Toronto and the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modelling (SOCCOM) project, was monitoring the area with satellite technology after a similar hole opened past year.
