In a recent piece on The Guardian, Lola Ogunyemi, the black female model in the advertisement said the video was "misinterpreted", saying that she was able to represent her community through the campaign.
People had condemned the ad, saying it was racist, and some declared a boycotting of the beauty brand.
"Having the opportunity to represent my dark-skinned sisters in a global beauty brand felt like the flawless way for me to remind the world that we are here, we are handsome, and more importantly, we are valued", wrote Ogunyemi in a Tuesday op-ed for the Guardian. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused. She also says that she feels the public was justified in their initial outrage.
Overwhelmed by the controversy, Ogunyemi assured that she wouldn't have agreed to participate if she had any inclination that she, and other dark-skinned women, would be portrayed as inferior.
"While I agree with Dove's response to unequivocally apologise for any offense caused, they could have also defended their creative vision, and their choice to include me, an unequivocally dark-skinned black woman, as a face of their campaign", she said.

In defence of Dove, the model assured that her experience with the brand, and on-set, was nothing but positive, assuring that ad's concept was clearly communicated- using the models' differences to unite them in idea that all skin deserves gentleness.
She felt proud to be the face of the beauty campaign and to represent "Black Girl Magic'".
"I had been excited to be a part of the commercial and promote the strength and beauty of my race, so for it to be met with widespread outrage was upsetting", the Nigerian-Brit raised in Atlanta wrote. "I think the full TV edit does a much better job of making the campaign's message loud and clear". The narrative has been written without giving consumers context on which to base an informed opinion, ' she wrote.
