Numerous scientific agencies on both sides of the Pacific detected an quake Saturday near the site where North Korea set off a hydrogen bomb earlier this month, at first prompting speculation of another weapons test, before a consensus appeared to emerge that the tremor was a natural occurrence.

The epicentre is roughly the same as that of a previous shallow quake on September 3, which turned out to be caused by a North Korean nuclear test, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Later, China's Earthquake Administration revised its estimation, saying the quake was not a nuclear detonation, according to Reuters. The president's office did add that "analysis is still ongoing so we will keep you posted".

The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) said the tremors were unlikely to have been man-made, following initial concerns Pyongyang had carried out further weapons tests.

The United States Geological Survey, the peak body on earthquakes, has yet to determine if the quake was natural or artificially caused.

Nuclear proliferation watchdog CTBTO is examining unusual seismic activity in North Korea that took place around 50 km (31 miles) from previous nuclear testing in the isolated country, it said on Saturday.

Seismic activity in North Korea could be a missile test. On Thursday, the US unveiled its own set of economic sanctions targeting North Korea.

The natural disaster is reported to have occurred near a nuclear test site and previous quakes have occurred during weapons' tests.

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, now in NY for a United Nations meeting, warned on Thursday that Kim could consider a hydrogen bomb test of an unprecedented scale over the Pacific.

Tensions have continued to rise since North Korea carried out its sixth nuclear test, prompting a new round of United Nations sanctions.

North Korea has been working on developing missiles that can reach the United States and its allies and pair them with a miniaturized nuclear warheads.

Newly released photos appear to reveal unexpected advances in North Korea's missile program, experts say, including a previously unseen type of projectile.

On Friday, Donald Trump publicly branded the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a "rocket man" and said American "really had no choice" but to confront the authoritarian regime.

The president assured those in attendance, without details, that he would defend the US against any offensives launched by North Korea: "I can tell you one thing, you are protected, OK?"

"Trump, the president of so-called "power, ' is mad enough to wag his tongue without any consideration that he would 'totally destroy" a sovereign state".
