China's natural disaster administration has said it suspects an "explosion" caused the quake in the rogue state.

"A key method is to look at the seismic waves or seismic acoustic waves and the latter can be detected in the case of a manmade quake", said the official, who asked for anonymity.

North Korea said its recent nuclear test was a detonation of a thermonuclear weapon built for its developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The moves follow the adoption of a unanimous UN Security Council agreement on sanctions after the isolated North conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3.

There have been so many rounds of sanctions against North Korea that it can be hard to keep track.

China warned on Friday that the situation on the Korean Peninsula was "complicated and sensitive" and called for restraint on all sides after North Korea hinted that it might explode a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean.

Ri is due to address the United Nations later on Saturday.

Trump on Friday called North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a "madman", a day after Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged US dotard" who would face the "highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history" in retaliation for Trump saying the USA will "totally destroy" North Korea if it threatens the United States or its allies.

During a press briefing Thursday afternoon, Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin unveiled new sanctions aimed at restricting North Korea and its developing nuclear program.

The state's media reports the rumble was detected at a depth of 0km on the same site as previous tests, however a South Korean weather service has said it could be a "natural" quake. Mnuchin did say, however, that he had a "very productive" conversation this morning with representatives of the Bank of China, but added that there was no coordination of these announcements ahead of time between the US and China.

China has also urged calm, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi telling his Japanese counterpart that Tokyo should not abandon dialogue over North Korea.

Imports of textiles from North Korea would also be banned immediately, the statement said.

The North accuses the United States, which has 28,500 troops in South Korea, of planning to invade and regularly threatens to destroy it and its Asian allies.
