The student who was attacked, a junior at Cornell, had tried to break up a fight in his front yard on Eddy Street early Friday morning. University officials say he's a Cornell student.

Police say they have arrested one man, charged him with misdemeanor assault, and are investigating "any racially biased motivation" for the attack. Greenwood's attorney, meanwhile, tells the Cornell Sun that his client wasn't involved in a physical altercation of any kind. "My client understands this well; such language not only offends his values but does not reflect the person he is". Police did not identify the arrested student.

The Psi Upsilon chapter at the school was closed by its board of governors after a 19-year-old student said to be a member of another fraternity reportedly beat the student and repeatedly called him "n***er" in the process of the assault.

Further investigation into the racially-motivated assault has uncovered the alleged involvement of members of Psi Upsilon, which according to President Pollack's most recent statement, will not be recognized for re-affiliation pending investigation. The name of the fraternity was not released, but a day after the attack was reported the words "You Racist Fucks" appeared in spray-paint on the wall of Psi Upsilon's fraternity house. It was banned on campus previous year for violating student codes.

Black Students United, a student advocacy group, said: 'What eludes this campus is true equality among students of color and their white counterparts'. She also announced a presidential task force that will address "persistent problems of bigotry and intolerance at Cornell".

One of Pollack's initiatives includes asking student dean Vijay Pendakur to create a new dispute resolution process "based on restorative justice".

"The chapter was originally planning to petition for reinstatement with Cornell this fall, but we feel it is best to wait to restart after all initiated members who are current students have graduated. But it is absolutely not who we want to be", Pollack said in a statement.

"Black students are not going to slip into complacency because Martha sent a nice email", Fears added.
