U.S. President Donald Trump, who was due to address the U.N.in NY on Tuesday, spoke by phone to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Monday, with the White House saying the two men were committed to "maximizing pressure on North Korea".

It prompted renewed sanctions from the UN Security Council, which is scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss the matter during the annual General Assembly gathering of world leaders at the United Nations.

"We must thoroughly enforce the successive resolutions in order to prevent North Korea from obtaining the goods, technologies, funds and people to further develop its missiles and nuclear programme".

"Along with our willingness to resolve external risks, the North Korean nuclear issue shows that global multilateral cooperation will ensure the solid foundation of the South Korean economy", he added.

Haley warned a war would mean the destruction of North Korea.

- Cairo said it was cutting military ties with North Korea. The event marks the second provocation this month after the September 3 nuclear test, which appears to be the sixth and the strongest.

Lisa Collins, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said other nations will be watching the United States at the U.N. next week to determine Trump's next steps.

China accounts for about 90 percent of North Korea's trade.

North Korea has warned world leaders that the latest wave of UN sanctions created to punish the nation will only accelerate their nuclear programme.

Mattis said after Kim tested a hydrogen bomb earlier this month that the United States would answer any threat from the North with a "massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming".

North Korea sent an intermediate-range missile over the northern part of Japan and into the Pacific Ocean, completing the country's longest test flight of a ballistic missile. Both countries have repeatedly called for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

The U.S. and South Korean planes practiced attacks by releasing live weapons at a firing range in South Korea, the U.S. Pacific Command said in a statement.

The Chinese fleet consists of missile destroyer "Shijiazhuang", missile frigate "Daqing", comprehensive supply ship "Dongpinghu", submarine rescue ship "Changdao", a deep submersible rescue vehicle, two ship-borne helicopters and marines. "Too bad!" he added, possibly referring to a new round of sanctions approved against North Korea following the country's latest nuclear provocation.

The anti-DPRK sanctions campaign of the US has grown so reckless as to impose a full-scale blockade of all sections to include areas directly related to the livelihood of civilian population as well as foreign trade of the country.
