Katrin Garfoot claims slice of cycling history

With an impressive ride, Australian Katrin Garfoot rounded out the podium, earning her second consecutive bronze medal in the worlds time trial championships.

American rider Lauren Stephens set the fastest time early, but van der Breggen soon knocked her from the top spot.

The 36-year-old Queensland cyclist came home strongly in the race against the clock to finish 18 seconds behind Dutch victor Annemiek Van Vleuten and just seven second behind bronze medallist Anna Van der Breggen. The 27-year-old benefitted from starting on dry roads.

A nasty climb at the end of the course was always likely to challenge the usual time trial specialists, but Van Vleuten negotiated the ascent in slippery conditions to claim a well-deserved world title. It was hard because it started pouring with rain and I lost some seconds on the descents.

In total, she has won one gold, two silver and third bronze, with the breakthrough success coming two years ago in Richmond, Virginia.

Australian Katrin Garfoot was third, as she was past year, 19 seconds behind, while New Zealand's Linda Villumsen was sixth, 37sec off a podium spot.

The title comes a little more than a year following an ugly crash at the road race in the 2016 Rio Olympics that left her with three spinal fractures and a concussion.

"I just gave it my all; I couldn't have given any more", said the multiple Australian champion.

"This year I started to believe in it, and to be able to finish it off is incredible".

"The downs make the ups more attractive, makes it really special", the Dutchwoman added. "[Winning the world title] after crashing in Rio makes the story really special".

A world-class field has denied Kiwi road cycling great Linda Villumsen a seventh world championships medal in the time trial.
